I was constantly on my toes wondering what would happen next. The amount of research and time it would have taken to create such a realistic, tangible world is just incredible. The plot and world building had me completely enthralled.Ĭhloe Gong has some serious skills. These Violent Delights delivers so much more than I could ever imagine! It reads as historical fiction/fantasy, and one of my favourite things about this genre is that you get a glimpse of another time period and part of the world, and also have the fun that comes with fantasy. I don’t want a classic Romeo and Juliet story set in some boring white town in the US. But a story based on this play and set in Shanghai…that had me sold! I love retellings that are unique. Romeo and Juliet happens to be my least favourite Shakespeare play (though that honestly doesn’t mean much since I haven’t read a lot of Shakespeare). This book completely drew me in, kept me on the edge of my seat, and made me feel way too many emotions then should be legal. As the deaths stack up, Juliette and Roma must set their guns-and grudges-aside and work together, for if they can’t stop this mayhem, then there will be no city left for either to rule.

And behind every move is their heir, Roma Montagov, Juliette’s first love…and first betrayal.īut when gangsters on both sides show signs of instability culminating in clawing their own throats out, the people start to whisper. Their only rivals in power are the White Flowers, who have fought the Scarlets for generations.

At the heart of it all is eighteen-year-old Juliette Cai, a former flapper who has returned to assume her role as the proud heir of the Scarlet Gang-a network of criminals far above the law.

Goodreads Summary: The year is 1926, and Shanghai hums to the tune of debauchery.Ī blood feud between two gangs runs the streets red, leaving the city helpless in the grip of chaos.
